Highland won their playoff opener 8-4 over Cardinal, using two big innings of offense and a stellar outing from Dan Burton to win.

After no hits in their first at-bat, Cardinal put a runner in scoring position but couldn't advance him because of a diving catch from right fielder Cory Stewart.

In the second inning, Burton reached on an error to start off the inning. Cardinal then walked Jordan Sosa and Grant Colbert. A passed ball scored courtesy runner Connor Grinstead to push across the first run.

In his second at-bat, Bill Laughlin hit a single that bounced off second base and allowed two runners to score. Trey Lasek followed it up with a hit to make it 4-0.

The Huskies added three more runs in the fourth. Two came on a Jacob Leonard bomb over the left field fence. The other came on a Jordan Sosa RBI single to Grinstead for his second run of the day.

Cardinal got one run after a pair of back-to-back hits. Their final runs were scored in the seventh, adding three runs before Trey Lasek caught a high fly ball to finish the game.

Highland will face off against SEISC North foe Iowa Mennonite on Tuesday at Burlington Notre Dame at 5 p.m. The winner of that game will take on the winner of Burlington Notre Dame and Pekin next Saturday.
