Rock the Chalk

Jennifer Rodgers winning entry in the Rock The Chalk event features the Hawk Truck owned by her employer TanTara.

Riverside resident Jennifer Rodgers drives a truck for Muscatine-based TanTara, so when she had to come up with a subject for her chalk drawing in the Rock The Chalk event, the choice was easy – the TanTara Hawk Truck that hauls the University of Iowa football team’s gear around the country.

People attending the Iowa City event loved her drawing, and Rodgers won the People’s Choice Award.

Rodgers filled an 8-foot square section of sidewalk with a picture of the truck and the words “Go Hawks” and “Thank A Trucker.”

“I already have a love for trucks,” Rodgers said.

“This was my first year there,” she said. “I had never done chalk drawing before.”

The award comes with $250.

Rodgers is already thinking about next year and things she could improve.

Artists with experience bring a canopy to work under. The beating sun limited the time Rodgers could work on the drawing. If she had more time to work, she would have filled in the background more on her drawing this year.

The Artist Choice Award went to the Iowa City Area Chinese Association.
