The Washington County Riverboat Foundation awarded 22 grants of almost $1.5 million to area cities and organizations.

The big winner: The City of Ainsworth, which received $330,000 to build a new fire station.

The awards were announced at a reception at the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort on May 15. There were two categories – $811,400 in municipal awards given to Washington County cities and towns based on population and competitive grants of $628,723 given to 13 organizations.

The 13 winners were culled from 73 applications.

The May 15 awards boosts the number of grants given by the foundation to 1,362 since 2006 for a total of $45.6 million.

The municipal awards went to:

• Ainsworth, $34,000.

• Brighton, $39,000.

• Coppock, $800.

• Crawfordsville, $16,000.

• Kalona, $138,000.

• Riverside, $60,000.

• Wellman, $90,000.

• Washington, $425,000.

The 13 competitive grants each had a story about where the money was going, but none of the stories was as compelling as the story about the Ottumwa Fire Department, which received $10,000 for another river rescue boat.
