Storms ruled the early part of the day, pushing the start of day two back an hour. Despite the late start, rain continued to pour down on athletes during the early goings of the race. 

The day featured multiple medals for the Mid-Prairie girls track team as they aim for a team championship. The Mid-Prairie boys won one medal. 

Mid-Prairie brings home gold in the distance medley

A slight lean at the finish line gave Mid-Prairie a win in the distance medley relay as the Golden Hawks came from behind for the win. 

The Golden Hawk relay of Abbagail Evans, Cassidy Rourke, Amber Swart and Marie Hostetler won the event by just 0.02 seconds with a time of 4:08.74. 

Hostetler was able to catch the Aplington-Parkersburg squad that led the race heading into the final lap and a lean across the finish line gave Mid-Prairie the win. 

The win is the second of the state meet for the Mid-Prairie girls. 

Mid-Prairie girls medal in 4x200

Amber Swart, Mitzi Evans, Maddie Edgington and Abbagail Evans took fourth place in the 4x200, beating their seeding in the race by nine spots with a time of 1:48.32. 

Their time was a second faster than at districts. 

Mid-Prairie boys medal, PR in 4x200

A time of 1:31.87 gave Mid-Prairie's 4x200 relay a season best and seventh-place finish in the race. 

Quinn Schmidt, Caleb Thomas, Grant Boyse and Elmir Ganibegovic won the first of three heats in the event. 

Mid-Prairie, Highland qualify for 4x100 finals

Both the Mid-Prairie and Highland girls qualified for the finals on Saturday in the 4x100-meter relay. 

The penultimate event at the state meet will feature Swart, Mitzi Evans, Edgington and Abbagail Evans in the Class 2A version of the race. They ran a 50.97 in qualifying, third fastest in 2A.

Highland's experienced quartet of Sarah Schneider, Aly Stokes, Kristy Thomann and Emily Yahnke qualified for the Class 1A finals. 

Bevy of Lions run

Lone Tree had a busy day at the state meet, running three of four events qualified on Friday. 

Holley Johnson had the highest finish of any Lion with a 13th place finish in the 400 meter hurdles at 1:10.75. 

She also ran as part of the distance medley with Kasey Chown, Macie Bopp and Natalie Patterson. The Lady Lions placed 18th at 4:31.73.

The Lone Tree boys ran their distance medley to a 20th place finish. Alex Viner, Konner Coppinger, Avery Knock and Keegan Edwards ran a time of 3:48.42. 

Mid-Prairie improves on seed in 4x100

The Mid-Prairie boys 4x100 of Clarke Latcham, Caleb Thomas, Elmir Ganibegovic and Grant Boyse came in seeded 22nd and finished in 17th place with a time of 45.11. 

Highland girls 10th in 4x200

After many races together Sarah Schneider, Aly Stokes, Kristy Thomann and Emily Yahnke ran their final 4x200 as a group and finished 10th in Class 1A. 

The Huskies finished with a time of 1:49.42. 

Baker, Boyse throw discus

Mid-Prairie's Jack Baker and Tori Boyse braved wet conditions and threw the discus on Friday at the state meet. 

Tori Boyse finished 18th with a long of 106-feet 7-inches. 

Jack Baker finished 20th with a long of 121-feet 2-inches. 

Saturday schedule moved up

The entire Saturday schedule at the state meet has been moved up one hour. The Mid-Prairie girls sprint medley will run first at 8:12 a.m. 

The schedule will run as a rolling schedule to hopefully beat anticipated weather. Here's the full approximate Saturday schedule: 

  • Mid-Prairie girls sprint medley, 8:12 a.m. 
  • Mid-Prairie boys sprint medley, 9 a.m. 
  • Leah Bontrager, 800 run, 9:30 a.m.
  • Marie Hostetler and Mitzi Evans, 800 run, 9:40 a.m.
  • Madison Thomann, 1500 run, 1:45 p.m. 
  • Marie Hostetler and Angelina Evans, 1500 run, 1:53 p.m.
  • Highland and Mid-Prairie, Girls 4x100 meter finals, 2:25 p.m.
