Prior political experience:
Why are you running in the election?
I’ve lived in Kalona for 25 years and now that I am retired, I would like to serve the community.
If elected, what do you hope to accomplish?
As an owner, publisher and editor of The Kalona News for nearly 25 years, I feel I can represent the business community as well as the elderly population of the city. I own both residential and commercial property in Kalona and I see continued rising property taxes. I will be taking a conservative approach to city expenditures.
What would you say to an undecided voter to convince them to give you their vote?
Because I do not work out of town, I will be more accessible to the taxpayers.
In the past 25 years, I have served as president of the Kalona Chamber of Commerce, The Kalona Economic Development Board, the Kalona Rotary Club and the Kalona Optimist Club and am now vice president of the Optimist Club.
I have been a member of the City of Kalona Planning & Zoning Commission for over 20 years. I also served as board member and secretary of the Washington County Riverboat Foundation for 6 years.
I think this background helps me be more familiar with the people of Kalona and their concerns.
