Beginning Sept. 9, getting to Washington from Kalona will take some extra time.
The Iowa Department of Transportation announced last week that a portion of Highway 1 about three miles south of Highway 22 in Kalona will be closed for a bridge replacement.
Iowa DOT transportation planner Hector Torres-Cacho said that the closure will last about two weeks, weather permitting.
Local traffic will still have access to Highway 1 except for the bridge crossing.
On July 8, construction began on a new 120-foot-by-44-foot bridge over Camp Creek, on the east side of the current 83-foot-by-30-foot bridge.
While the new bridge was being constructed, traffic continued to flow over the current bridge.
During the upcoming closure, the current bridge will be taken down, and the new bridge will be slid into place.
This process is called accelerated bridge construction.
During the two-week closure, Iowa DOT will detour traffic east on Highway 22 to Highway 218 south in Riverside.
The detour then follows Highway 218 south to Highway 92 west to Washington.
The detour is approximately 32 miles.
Peterson Contractors of Reinbeck was awarded the $1.7 million contract for the project in December 2018.
Public meetings regarding the project were held in spring 2017.
